Sam’s teaching philosophy focuses on building the fundamentals of your musicianship while developing and nurturing your own individual voice and musical direction.With expansive educational, performance, compositional experience in both jazz and classical idioms, Sam’s holistic approach is a great fit for any student looking to develop their own musical skills.
Sam is currently on faculty in the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz / Hartt School of Music at The University of Hartford where he serves as the Artist Teacher of Jazz Trombone and the Director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz Big Band. As an experienced educator, he also served as the Director of the Tri-C JazzFest Academy and as an adjunct professor at Cleveland Institute of Music, Cuyahoga Community College, and Youngstown State University. Sam has also been a guest artist/clinician at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Oberlin College & Conservatory, The University of Akron, among others.
Sam holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Youngstown State University and a Master of Music in Classical Brass Performance from The University of Akron.
